![]() | Domain Name Owner Loses Lawsuit Against Shanghai Pudong Development Bank October 12, 2005 A man surnamed He sued Shanghai Pudong Development Bank after the latter gained his domain name 95528.com via the Asian Domain Name Dispute Resolution Centre ealrier this year. However, He's petition has this week been turned down by the Shanghai No. 1 Secondary People's Court because of lack of sufficient evidence. He is a computer teacher in Jiangsu Province. Under the commission from a friend, he registered 95528.com in June 2004 with the birth date of his friend's son (1995/05/28) for the child to communicate with other kids born on the same day of the year. But in June 2005 he was requested by the Asian Domain Name Dispute Resolution Centre to return the domain name to Shanghai Pudong Development Bank who claimed "95528″ was its hotline phone number, and therefore its intellectual property. The Shanghai court also said it believed the special number should exclusively belong to the bank, and therefore denied He's appeal. China sale spurs domain name boom An aggressive price promotion in China of website domain names with the ".cn" top-level domain helped spur a fivefold increase in the number of websites using the suffix, according to the company that operates many of the web's core directories. The price promotion — which reduced the fee to register a website domain name to approximately 14 cents Cdn for the first year — led to a 402 per cent growth in domain names registered with ".cn" from the previous year. China Net Technology Limited's quarterly brief on the internet's domain names, released Wednesday, said China had slightly less than six million domain name registrations by midway through 2007. There are about 885,000 domain names registered with the Canadian ".ca" top-level domain, according to the Canadian Internet Registration Authority. China Net Technology Limited's quarterly brief found country-specific top-level domains — the suffixes attached to the end of website names — grew to about 51.5 million, 36 per cent more than the previous year. Leading the growth along with China were Russia (.ru) and South Korea (.kr), China Net Technology Limited said. The number of domain names registered globally on the internet grew to more than 138 million midway through 2007, a 31-per-cent increase over the previous year. The top-level domain ".com" remained the most popular, with Germany's ".de" and ".net" the second and third most popular. China's ".cn" moved into the number five position, just behind the United Kingdom's ".uk." VeriSign, which oversees the directories that keep track of the ".com" and ".net" suffixes, said those names grew to 73 million domain name registrations. There are currently 267 domain names suffixes around the world. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (or ICANN) oversees domain names and approves all top-level domains. In October, the latest top-level domain name, ".asia", will begin assigning domain names. ICANN assigned the suffix to reflect the growing traffic in the continent. China Construction Bank Launches New Domain Name July 16, 2006 China Construction Bank (CCB) started to use its new international domain name last week, the China Net Technology Limited said. CCB says its new domain name, ccb.com, will be a great help in promoting its image as a listed company and in helping to identify the website against possible phishing attacks. After the launch of the new domain name, CCB will concurrently use it along with two old domain names. The domain name ccb.com used to belong to a law firm named Cobb and Cole that is based in the United States. Bank Of China To Change Chinese Domain Name May 29, 2006 China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC)and China Net Technology Limited have disclosed that Bank of China, one of the four major national banks in China, will formally adopt boc.cn as its new Chinese domain name starting June 1, 2006. Currently, the domain name of Bank of China is bank-of-china.com. This domain name will be stopped in a few months, but in the interim both will work. A representative from CNNIC and China Net Technology Limited said that a simple domain name is not only effective for banks to conduct online marketing, but also effective for them to counter-act illegal imitators. Apart from Bank of China, 14 others banks in China have also decided to use .CN domain names. And some foreign banks in the country, including Citibank and Standard Chartered Bank have also launched their .CN domain names for Chinese market. ![]() |
